A major operation triggered a medical emergency for Judith who experienced a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) after being given a common antibiotic during surgery.
On her doctor’s advice, Judith immediately joined the MedicAlert Foundation and has worn her stainless steel bracelet everyday since.
“Together with details of my allergy, I also have my rare blood type engraved on my emblem as it’s vital that I never receive my own blood type if I need a transfusion,” she says.
Despite having angina, Judith leads a very active lifestyle dividing her time between weekly ten-pin bowling, part-time work and keeping up with two young grandchildren.
She says the only time in the past 30 years she has taken her bracelet off, was when she lost it - and fortunately found it again, in the boot of her car.
“I can’t imagine going out without having my bracelet on. It’s part of me.”
“While my allergy and blood type are clearly flagged on my hospital and doctors’ files, in an emergency when I may be unable to speak for myself, my MedicAlert could literally be a lifesaver,” Judith believes.
